GaN is the reason these chargers are small. Gallium nitride switches more efficiently than silicon, produces less waste heat, and lets a manufacturer put high output into a body that still fits a wall socket without blocking the one beside it. For anyone charging a laptop and a phone from one plug, that size difference is the whole point.

Two numbers matter when comparing chargers. The first is total output, and the second is what each port delivers when several are in use — many multi-port chargers split their capacity, so a 100W charger may only give 65W to a laptop once a phone is plugged in as well. The product page specification, not the headline wattage, is where that is written down.

Cables matter as much as the charger. High-wattage charging needs a cable rated for it; a standard USB-C cable will limit a 140W charger regardless of what the charger can do.

• Buy the charger and cable together. Bundles usually cost less than the two separately, and a high-wattage charger needs a matching cable to be worth having.
• Check the per-port output. Paying for 140W total is wasted if the port you use drops to 65W when a second device is connected.
