What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. It lets the site recognise your browser on a later page or a later visit. Cookies cannot run programs or read other files on your device.

Some things that behave like cookies — local storage, tracking pixels in emails — are covered by this policy too.

Why DiscountsBundle uses them

Three reasons, and it is worth being plain about the third:

  • To make the site work — keeping your session, protecting forms against cross-site request forgery.
  • To measure how the site is used, so we know which pages are worth writing more of.
  • To have affiliate commissions attributed. When you click through to a retailer, that retailer or its network sets a cookie recording that you arrived from us. If you then buy something, that cookie is how we get paid. Without it, the site has no income.

The cookies involved

Strictly necessary

Set by us. The session cookie that keeps your visit consistent, and the token that protects forms from being submitted by another site. These cannot be turned off without breaking the site, and they do not track you across other websites.

Typical lifetime: the browser session, or up to a few hours.

Analytics

Set by the analytics service we use, to count visits and see which pages are read. We are interested in totals and trends, not in identifying individuals.

Typical lifetime: up to two years, depending on the provider.

Affiliate tracking

Set by the retailer or by the affiliate network when you follow a link from here to a store. These record that the visit came from us so a resulting sale is credited correctly. They are set on the retailer's domain, not ours, and are governed by that company's own policies.

Typical lifetime: commonly 24 hours to 90 days, set by the retailer.

Preferences

If you dismiss a notice or set an option on the site, a cookie may remember that so you are not asked again.

Typical lifetime: up to a year.

Third parties

The third parties that may set cookies through this site are our analytics provider, and the affiliate networks and retailers whose links appear on our pages. We do not control the cookies they set, and their own privacy and cookie policies apply. If you want to know exactly what a particular retailer stores, their policy is the place to look.

Controlling cookies

You are in charge of this, and there are several levels:

  • Browser settings. Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, either entirely or per site. Look under Privacy or Site Settings.
  • Block third-party cookies. Most browsers offer this as a single switch, and several now do it by default.
  • Private browsing. Cookies set in a private window are discarded when you close it.
  • Analytics opt-outs. Analytics providers generally publish a browser add-on or a setting to opt out of measurement.
  • Tracker blockers. Extensions and some browsers block tracking cookies as standard.

What happens if you block them

Honest answer: the site will still work for you. Pages load, codes are visible, articles read normally. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may break forms. Blocking affiliate cookies means we will not be paid if you buy something — that costs us, not you, and you are entitled to make that choice.

Do Not Track

Browsers can send a "Do Not Track" signal. There is still no agreed standard for how sites should respond to it, so we do not currently change our behaviour based on it. Where a recognised opt-out signal such as Global Privacy Control applies to us by law, we honour it.

Changes

If the cookies we use change, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change with it.
